Once you have a date of death, along with an accurate full name, you can look for actual obituaries in online newspaper archives.

New York Times Archives
Archives from 1851 - 1922 AND 1987-present are free of charge. Everything in between (1923 to 1986) you have to pay for, for some odd reason.

Google News
Used the advanced search feature to make sure you zero in on the exact dates for the obituary you're looking for.
